    The Laboratoire des 3S : Sport, Santé, Société (L3S) at Antonine University (UA) is organizing a webinar entitled Pain, in the Body or the Brain? to explore the intriguing interplay between physical and psychological factors in the perception of pain. Participants will delve into the complex mechanisms underlying pain and how emotional and cognitive factors can influence its intensity and duration.

    The workshop aims to highlight the importance of a holistic approach to pain management, taking into account both physiological and psychological aspects. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection in relation to pain and its implications for healthcare and well-being.

    This session will be conducted virtually, with the speaker joining remotely, and participants will also have the option to attend on campus from the Library.

    Workshop Objectives

    • Understand the intricate relationship between physical and psychological factors in pain perception
    • Explore the neurobiological mechanisms underlying pain and how they interact with emotional and cognitive processes

    Speaker: Dr. Paul van Wilgen, Physical Therapist, Psychologist, and Epidemiologist

    Dr. Paul van Wilgen is a Professor at the Department of Physiotherapy, Human Physiology, and Anatomy in the Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy, Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium. He is also a founding member of the international research group Pain in Motion. He completed his PhD in 2004, after working as a clinician and researcher at the University Medical Centre in Groningen. Then, he pursued post-doctoral work before establishing Transcare, a transdisciplinary pain management center in the Netherlands that caters to patients with persistent pain and chronic fatigue. Dr. van Wilgen has made significant contributions to the field of pain management, with over 150 scientific publications and 4 books to his credit. His notable works include publications on pain education and graded activity. His areas of expertise encompass pain neuroscience education, cultural adaptation, central sensitization processes in patients with persistent pain, psychosocial factors associated with pain and central sensitization, lifestyle interventions, as well as transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration in pain management.
