    19 January 2024
An Evening of Arab Musical Traditions

Tripoli, the Capital of Arab Culture for the Year 2024

Under the patronage and presence of His Excellency the Minister of Culture, Judge Mohammed Wissam Mortada, the Faculty of Music and Musicology (FMM) at Antonine University (UA) is honored to organize An Evening of Arab Musical Traditions, performed by the Arab Music Heritage Ensemble, led by Dr. Hayaf Yassine, Chairperson of UA’s Department of Arabic Art Music.

    Audience: Open to the public
    Date: Friday, January 19, 2023
    Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Antonine University, Mejdlaya–Zgharta Campus, Theater

Since its establishment in 2003, the Arab Music Heritage Ensemble has been committed to performing diverse Arab musical traditions, particularly those of the Levant, whether they are religious or secular, popular or artistic. This approach aligns with the slogan “Tripoli, the Capital of Arab Culture for the Year 2024.” The ensemble takes the form of an authentic Arab musical ensemble, consisting of a small and specific group of musical instruments. It focuses on single musical modes and renews its style from within, showcasing improvisation in the most beautiful musical forms, including instrumental performances, “layali,” “mouwals” (vocal improvisations), and sung poems.

The concert program includes a wide range of works by pioneering musicians from various Arab countries, such as Omar Al-Batsh (1885–1950, Aleppo), Amer Khaddaj (Palestine), Saleh Abdel Hai (1896–1962, Egypt), Hassiba Mousha (Lebanon), Wadih El Safi (1921–2013, Lebanon), Najah Salam (1931–2023, Lebanon), and Zaki Nassif (1916–2004, Lebanon).

Join us for an unforgettable evening of Arab musical traditions!
