  • Antonine University (UA) honors its students with a virtual commencement ceremony

    30 October 2020

Antonine University organized a virtual commencement ceremony (VCC) for the Class of 2020, the “Legends of 2020” during which diplomas were distributed to graduates from different Faculties from the three University campuses located in Hadat–Baabda, Nabi Ayla–Zahle, and Mejdlaya–Zgharta. The ceremony was held on the main campus and live-streamed on the UA official Facebook page. Father Abbot Maroun Abou Jaoude, Superior General of the Antonine Maronite Order, attended the ceremony alongside Father Michel Jalakh, the University Rector, vice-rectors, deans, members of the University Council, and valedictorians of the Class of 2020. UA graduates attended the VCC with their loved ones through the UA official Facebook page.
The Antonine University Choir led by the Maestro Father Toufic Maatouk performed the national anthem instrumentally and vocally, and then the speeches were delivered successively.

During his speech, Father Jalakh addressed UA students, asking them to remember, “We paid the price of having short-sightedness in politics and blind greed in economics, of stereotyping cultures and behaving selfishly, and of outsmarting others to make quick profits by abusing the system, outwitting the law, and violating values”. Furthermore, he added, "The crisis is a treasure if you remember it and use its morals to avoid repeating the mistakes of our generation". He admitted, “We are ashamed of the mistakes of our generation, and we apologize! However, I hope that you will make good use of this lesson during your life. Woe upon us if a day comes when you will have to apologize to your children”.

Continuing his address, the Rector declared, “I am not speaking to you as victims of our current political, economic, sanitary, and safety crises. I am referring to you as the legends of these exceptional times that the Lebanese people and everyone consider as a bridge towards a new historical period”. He added, “You are paying the price of choices you did not make: we are facing political instability, an economic crisis, and an unknown future. While it is true that you are paying the price of the mistakes of the previous generations, you are now our only hope to change mentalities and make the right choices to build a better Lebanon for the sake of our future generations”. Finally, Father Jalakh concluded, “Today, the University has lost you as students, but earned you as friends at all times”.

Afterward, Noura Hanna, valedictorian of valedictorians for the Class of 2020, pronounced the graduates' speech. Father Jalakh offered her a token of appreciation and granted brilliant students scholarships and other signs of excellence. The winner of the Aida and Raymond Najjar Prize was announced, a prize that is annually offered by the Aida and Raymond Najjar Foundation to an outstanding student from the Faculty of Engineering at Antonine University. The awarded amount of 15,000USD entitles the holder to pursue their studies and specialization in the field.
Finally, the names of all the graduates were displayed, as well as pictures of them wearing caps and gowns.
